TUPU Pacific Research Grants

 

The Tupu Pacific Research Grants are a strategic partnership between the Pacific Islands Regional Universities Network (PIURN) and the International Science Council Regional Focal Point for Asia and the Pacific (ISC RFP-AP). The initiative is designed to strengthen Pacific-led research, foster collaboration among universities across the region, and build meaningful partnerships with Australian institutions to address the Pacific’s most pressing environmental, social, economic, and developmental challenges.

 

PIURN and ISC RFP-AP are pleased to invite proposals for the second edition of the Tupu Pacific Research Grants.

Background

 

The Tupu Pacific initiative reflects PIURN and ISC RFP-AP commitment to the region by providing opportunities for researchers across the region to develop innovative, impact-driven projects that respond to shared challenges.

 

Building on the success and strong demand generated by the inaugural round of Tupu Pacific grants, this expanded programme aims to further enhance Pacific research capacity, encourage interdisciplinary collaboration, and support research that contributes directly to regional development outcomes.

 

Delivered jointly by PIURN and the ISC Regional Focal Point for Asia and the Pacific, the programme seeks to strengthen connections between Pacific and Australian researchers while ensuring that Pacific institutions remain at the forefront of defining and addressing regional priorities.

 

Project Highlights

    • Projects must be led by one the Member Universities of the Pacific Islands Universities Regional Network.
    • Projects must involve collaborative research teams from at least one Pacific country and Australia.
    • Each project may request up to AUD 40,000 in total funding.
    • Projects should demonstrate clear alignment with one or more of the following frameworks:
      • The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs);
      • The 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent;
      • The Pacific Regional Research Agenda.
    • Funding cannot be used for institutional overhead or administrative costs.
    • All project activities must be completed by 30 November 2027.

Key Dates

    • Call opens: 7 October 2026
    • Applications close: 11:59pm AEDT, 16 November 2026
    • Assessment and notification of outcomes: December 2026
    • Funding agreements signed and projects commence: January 2027
    • Mid-project reports due: 31 May 2027
    • Project completion deadline: 30 November 2027
    • Final reports due: January 2028
