Documentary “Nations of Water, Law and Climate-induced migration in the Pacific”

The University of New Caledonia (UNC) and the Pacific
Islands Universities Research Network (PIURN) is honored to present you the
documentary “Nations of Water, Law and Climate-induced migration in the
Pacific”, directed by Pr Géraldine Giraudeau.

The 52 minutes documentary highlights the legal challenges
faced by the Pacific Islands Countries and Territories (PICTS) due to climate
change, with sea-level rise, coastal erosion, threatening the livelihoods and
the lives of the Pacific populations. The Pacific Islands Countries and
Territories only contribute for less than 1% of GHG emissions, however they
remain on the frontline of the impacts of climate change. Existing
international Conventions, laws do not cover the rights of climate-induced
refugees, therefore regional and international legal instruments need to be
adapted to protect the Pacific population.

“Nations of Water” explores the concrete effects climate-induced migration in Fiji, New Caledonia, Papua New Guinea, Samoa,Tuvalu, and offers a new insight on the threat of displacement and relocation of the Pacific populations.
